“Patient-centered care” is used as a catchall to characterize everything from cleaner hospital rooms to shared clinical decisions. In truth, the ways in which individuals interact with the health care system vary widely depending on whether they’re undressed in the exam room or price shopping on the Internet. Understanding communication, activation and engagement is a strategic imperative as accountable care organizations and similar payment arrangements become more common and as patient satisfaction, patient-reported outcomes and patient-generated health data become an integral part of how health care is delivered. Decades of clamoring for health care reform resulted in the drama-filled passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (a/k/a Obamacare) back in 2010. Despite widespread publicity, the impact on coverage for the uninsured, and on the health insurance of those who already have coverage, remains widely misunderstood. At least equally important are a long list of other changes that the actual delivery of care and the income and operations of every business involved in the health care field.
